What water does to a strand

Hair absorbs water readily, and the cortex swells as water moves into the protein structure. The hydrogen bonds that contribute to hair's stiffness are temporarily broken by water, which is exactly why wet hair can be reshaped. That same effect reduces the strand's ability to resist stretching, so wet hair extends further under load before it breaks.

A stretched strand does not fully recover, and repeated stretching weakens it progressively along its length. The practical consequence is that identical handling causes more damage wet than dry.

Repeated wetting and drying

The swelling and contraction of the strand with each wet-and-dry cycle puts stress on the cuticle scales lifting and settling. This is sometimes called hygral fatigue, and it is a plausible mechanism supported by more laboratory work than real-world study.

High-porosity and chemically treated hair absorbs and releases water faster, which is why it tends to show the effect sooner. Very long soaking, including lengthy conditioning treatments left on for hours, may contribute more than a normal wash does. The honest position is that this is a real physical process whose practical importance varies considerably between hair types.

Detangling without breaking

Detangling belongs on conditioned hair, since conditioner reduces friction between strands and lets a comb pass rather than pull. Starting at the ends and working upward in short sections means each tangle is released rather than dragged into a larger knot.

A wide-toothed comb or fingers applies force across more of the hair than a fine brush, which concentrates load at single points. Any point where the comb stops is a knot that needs separating rather than a resistance to pull through. Fine brushes belong on dry hair for smoothing rather than on wet hair for detangling.

Towels and the friction problem

Rubbing wet hair with a terry towel lifts cuticle scales, roughens the surface and creates the tangles you then have to comb out. Squeezing water out along the length applies far less friction and removes almost as much water.

By the end of a working day, a microfibre towel or an old cotton t-shirt has a smoother surface and does the same job with less abrasion. Wrapping hair tightly in a towel for long periods keeps it swollen for longer and applies tension at the hairline.

Blotting rather than rubbing is a small change that shows up over months rather than immediately.

Styling and sleeping on wet hair

Tying wet hair tightly puts a swollen, weakened strand under sustained tension at a single point. Sleeping on wet hair combines that weakness with several hours of friction against a pillow. It also keeps the scalp damp and warm for hours, which is not an environment scalp skin particularly benefits from.

Rough-drying to around eighty per cent before styling or sleeping removes most of the vulnerability. If air drying is the preference, doing it earlier in the evening solves the problem entirely.

Heat on wet hair

Applying a straightener or curling iron to hair that is still damp turns trapped water to steam inside the strand. That produces the audible sizzle and can create bubbles and fractures within the hair shaft.

After four to six weeks, hair dryers are designed to evaporate water gradually from the surface and are appropriate on wet hair as long as the heat is moderate. Holding a dryer close and static concentrates heat in one place, and constant movement at a distance dries just as fast. A heat protectant helps by distributing heat and slowing transfer, and it does not make high temperatures safe.
