One is a natural component of sebum that oxidises readily. The other is its hydrogenated cousin, which is why it sits on a shelf without going rancid.

Squalane is squalene with those double bonds saturated through hydrogenation, producing a stable molecule that does not readily go rancid. That stability is why cosmetics use the saturated version almost exclusively, and why the two names get confused constantly. Where it comes from
Squalane was historically obtained from shark liver oil, which is the origin of continuing ethical concern about the ingredient. Most cosmetic squalane today is derived from olives or produced by fermenting sugarcane, and labels increasingly specify the source.
After four to six weeks, the finished molecule is identical regardless of origin, so performance does not differ between plant and marine sources. If provenance matters to you, it is one of the few cases where the ingredient list may genuinely need supplementing with a brand statement. Sugarcane-derived versions are typically the most consistent in purity, since fermentation is a controlled process.
How it behaves on skin
It is a lightweight emollient that spreads easily, absorbs without a greasy residue and leaves a soft rather than shiny finish. Because it resembles a component skin already produces, it is generally very well tolerated, including by reactive skin.
It is widely regarded as unlikely to clog pores, though individual response varies and no ingredient is universally safe on that front. It works well as the final step over a humectant layer, or mixed with a few drops into a moisturiser to enrich it. As an emollient it improves feel and reduces roughness; it is not a deeply occlusive material and does not substitute for one.
What it does not do
It contains no actives, signals nothing to skin cells and does not change structure at any depth. Claims that it restores skin's natural oil balance overstate a simple emollient effect considerably. It will not help significantly with pigmentation, lines or breakouts, and buying it for those reasons leads to disappointment.
Its value is comfort, tolerability and texture, which are legitimate reasons to use something.
In a routine full of actives, a genuinely boring ingredient with no side effects is often the most useful thing in it.
Comparing it to plant oils
Jojoba is technically a wax ester and behaves similarly on skin, with a slightly different feel and a good tolerance record. Sunflower oil is rich in linoleic acid and has been studied in relation to barrier support, while some richer oils feel heavier. Coconut oil is highly occlusive and is frequently associated with congestion on facial skin, though tolerance varies widely.
On the ingredient list, squalane sits at the light end of the range, which is why it appears in products aimed at people who dislike oils. Choosing between them is largely a question of feel, since their functional differences on healthy skin are modest.
