Body skin is built differently, and it wants different products

The same person can have oily skin on the face and cracked skin on the shins. Thickness, gland density and how often an area is washed explain most of the gap.

What follows is the working version of body skin versus face skin: the decisions in the order you actually meet them, with the reasoning attached.

Thickness and gland density

The stratum corneum varies enormously across the body, from very thin over the eyelid to dramatically thicker on the palms and soles. Sebaceous glands cluster densely on the face, scalp, chest and upper back, and are sparse across the forearms, shins and lower legs. That distribution explains why a person can have a shiny nose and simultaneously have skin flaking off their calves in winter.

Areas with few glands depend almost entirely on the lipids already in the barrier, and once those are stripped there is little natural replacement. The lower legs are the driest region on most bodies for exactly this reason, and they need the richest products.

Why showers do most of the damage

Hot water makes skin lipids more fluid and easier to carry away, and a long hot shower removes considerably more than a short warm one. Body washes are frequently built on stronger surfactant systems than facial cleansers, since they are designed for larger areas and more sweat. Daily full-body lathering strips areas that produced almost nothing to begin with, which is why arms and legs suffer more than the chest.

Washing the parts that actually need it daily and rinsing the rest is a reasonable compromise that most dry legs would appreciate. Water temperature is the single easiest variable to change and produces a noticeable difference within a week.

What a body moisturiser should contain

A humectant such as glycerin or urea to bind water, an emollient to smooth the surface and an occlusive to hold it in. Urea appears in body products at roughly two to ten per cent as a humectant, and at much higher strengths it becomes keratolytic instead. Lactic acid and glycolic acid in body lotions exfoliate rough areas, and they raise sun sensitivity exactly as they do on the face.

Ointments and balms outperform lotions on cracked heels and hands because the film they leave is far less permeable. Applying within a few minutes of towelling, while skin is still damp, roughly doubles what the product achieves.

Areas that behave like the face

The chest and upper back carry high gland density and can develop congestion much like the face does, particularly under occlusive fabric. Hair conditioner and heavy body oils running down the back in the shower contribute, and rinsing hair before washing the body helps.

Under makeup, the neck sits between two regimes, thin enough to be delicate and exposed enough to need daily sun protection. Hands are washed more often than any other skin and lose their lipids faster than any lotion habit can keep up with.

Persistent, painful or spreading eruptions anywhere on the body are for a doctor rather than for a stronger body wash.

Sun exposure below the neck

Sun damage accumulates on the backs of hands, forearms and chest at a rate people rarely notice until it is well established. The quantity required to cover a body properly is far larger than most people apply, and thin coverage cuts protection sharply. Clothing is a more practical solution for large areas, and a tightly woven dry fabric blocks a substantial share of ultraviolet.

Wet or stretched fabric transmits considerably more, which is why a soaked shirt is a poor substitute at the beach. Shade and timing do more for large exposed areas than any realistic amount of lotion.

Building a body routine that survives

Two products cover almost everyone, a mild wash and a lotion applied to damp skin immediately afterwards. Keeping the lotion where you dry yourself removes the main reason people skip it, which is the walk to another room. Rougher areas such as elbows, knees and heels can take a richer or acid-containing product without changing what the rest gets.

Rough bumpy skin on the upper arms is extremely common, harmless and stubborn, and gentle acid exfoliation plus moisturising is the usual approach. Anything painful, itchy beyond mild or changing in appearance should be looked at by a doctor rather than managed with lotion.

The face and the shins are different organs in practice, so stop expecting one product to satisfy both.

Skin changes slowly. Anything promising otherwise is selling the promise.

You can, but it will run out immediately and it is usually formulated lighter than dry legs need. A richer, cheaper body product does the job better.
