Glycerin is the least glamorous ingredient that actually works

It appears near the top of almost every moisturiser ever made, costs very little and is never on the front of the pack. The reason is that it does one job extremely well.

Why it is in everything

Glycerin is a small three-carbon molecule with three hydroxyl groups, and each of those groups can hold onto water. That gives it a strong water-binding capacity for its size, and its small size lets it move into the outer layers rather than sitting on top.

It occurs naturally in skin, appears in the natural moisturising factor and is recognised by the surface rather than tolerated by it. It is cheap, stable, odourless and compatible with nearly every other cosmetic ingredient, which is a rare combination. None of that is exciting, which is exactly why it appears in the ingredient list rather than on the front of the box.

What the evidence actually supports

Among humectants, glycerin has one of the longest and most consistent research records, and the findings are unusually unglamorous. It increases the water content of the outer layer, improves how flexible that layer is and reduces the roughness that comes with dryness. There is also work suggesting it supports the normal maturation of surface cells, which affects how well the barrier holds together.

At the strengths actually sold, it has been used in medical dermatology preparations for a long time, which tends to indicate a substance that does what it says. Compared with newer humectants marketed heavily, the evidence gap runs strongly in glycerin's favour.

Concentration and texture

Around three to five per cent covers most moisturisers, which is enough for a clear effect without an unpleasant feel. Higher concentrations increase the water binding and also increase stickiness, which is the practical ceiling on how much a formula can carry. Products above roughly ten per cent tend to feel tacky, which is why very high-glycerin formulas are a minority taste.

By the end of a working day, pure glycerin from a pharmacy is far too concentrated to apply directly, and diluting it sensibly is the whole point of a formulation. The stickiness is also why glycerin is usually paired with emollients and silicones that improve the finish.

The dry air caveat

A humectant draws water from wherever it can reach, and in very dry air with nothing else to draw from it can pull from deeper skin. That effect is often exaggerated online, but it is real enough to explain why a humectant alone can feel unsatisfying in winter.

The fix is not to avoid glycerin but to apply it to damp skin and seal it with something that slows evaporation. This is the same principle behind every humectant, and it is why humectant, emollient and occlusive belong together in one routine.

In humid climates the concern largely disappears, since there is plenty of water in the air to draw on.

Glycerin against the alternatives

Hyaluronic acid holds impressive quantities of water and is a much larger molecule that mostly stays near the surface. Butylene glycol and propylene glycol are humectants that also act as solvents, and they contribute more to texture than to hydration. Sodium PCA, betaine and panthenol all work on the same principle with different molecular sizes and slightly different feels.

At the strengths actually sold, none of these outperforms glycerin dramatically, and a formula containing several of them is covering different molecular sizes deliberately. If a product carries an expensive humectant high on the list and glycerin low down, you are largely paying for the name.

Persistent, painful or changing skin conditions belong with a dermatologist rather than a routine.

Using it well

Apply humectant-containing products to skin that is still slightly damp, since a humectant with water available works far better. Follow with something emollient or occlusive so the water it binds does not evaporate within the hour. In hot humid weather a light glycerin-based gel may be all the moisturiser a face needs.

In cold dry weather the same product needs a richer layer over it rather than being replaced entirely. It is the ingredient most likely to be doing the work in a moisturiser you already like, whatever the front of the pack claims.

The takeaway

The most reliable hydrating ingredient in your cabinet is probably third on an ingredient list and never mentioned on the front.

Can I apply pure glycerin to my face?
