That combination means it exfoliates and hydrates at once, which is why it suits dry skin better than glycolic acid usually does. It is a larger molecule than glycolic acid and therefore penetrates less deeply, making it the gentler option at matching strength.

Leave-on cosmetic products commonly sit around five to ten per cent, and stronger professional peels are a different category entirely.

Why pH matters as much as percentage

An acid only works in its free acid form, and how much of it is free depends on the pH of the formula around it. A ten per cent lactic acid at a high pH can do less than a five per cent version formulated properly acidic.

Responsible brands state both figures, and the absence of a pH on the pack is a small but real information gap. Urea does not depend on pH in the same way, since its mechanism is not acid dissociation. Comparing two acid products on percentage alone is comparing half the information.

Introduce one at a time and give it several weeks, since surface turnover runs on a scale of weeks rather than days. Any acid raises sensitivity to ultraviolet light, so daily sunscreen is part of the product rather than an optional companion.

Stacking urea, an acid and a retinoid in one routine is where most avoidable irritation on this shelf comes from. Stinging that persists beyond the first moments, or redness that lasts, means the strength is wrong for you.
