How transfer resistance works

Long-wear formulas suspend pigment in volatile solvents alongside film-forming polymers that remain once the solvent evaporates. As the solvent leaves, the polymers knit into a continuous film that holds pigment against the surface.

That film resists water, oil and friction to varying degrees depending on the polymers chosen. It is the same principle across long-wear foundation, liquid lipstick and waterproof eye products. Understanding it explains both why these products perform and why they feel the way they do.

The comfort cost

A film that resists movement also resists the movement of your own face, which is why long-wear products feel tight. The volatile solvents that evaporate take some surface moisture with them, contributing to a drying sensation. On lips this is most obvious, since the tissue is thin and moves constantly with speech and expression.

At the strengths actually sold, on skin the film can emphasise texture, because it sets in whatever position the surface was in when applied. There is no formulation trick that eliminates this trade entirely, only ones that soften it.

Where the film fails

Films crack rather than smudge, so long-wear products tend to fail suddenly at points of maximum movement. Around the nose, at the inner corners of the eye and in the centre of the lip are the usual failure points. Once a film has cracked, adding more product on top rarely blends and usually looks worse than the crack did.

By the end of a working day, repairing means removing the affected area and reapplying, which is why touch-ups are harder than with conventional formulas. This is the main reason many people prefer conventional formulas for ordinary days and reserve long-wear for events.

Removal without damage

Force does not remove a polymer film; solvents do, which means an oil-based or bi-phase remover held in place rather than rubbed. Rubbing a resistant film across skin causes irritation, and around the eyes it damages lashes and the delicate lid margin.

By the end of a working day, bi-phase removers combine an oil layer and a water layer, and shaking them before use is what makes them work. Balm cleansers dissolve most long-wear formulas effectively when given thirty seconds of contact.

Following with a normal cleanser removes the remover, which is a step people frequently skip.

Choosing when to use them

Long days, heat, humidity, events and anything involving masks or close contact are where the trade is worth making. Ordinary office days rarely justify it, and the comfort penalty accumulates over consecutive days of use.

Under makeup, dry, flaking or reactive skin generally does badly with long-wear bases, which cling to and emphasise every irregularity. Alternating between long-wear and conventional formulas is a reasonable approach rather than committing to one. Preparing skin properly with hydration underneath softens the effect noticeably on all skin types.

Hybrid approaches

Applying a conventional base and setting only the areas that move gives much of the wear benefit with less of the cost. A long-wear product on the central face and a comfortable one elsewhere is a practical compromise.

After four to six weeks, using a long-wear lip liner under a conventional lipstick extends wear at the edges where colour usually fails first. Setting spray over a conventional base provides a lighter film that resists transfer without the tightness. Most people get better results from targeted use than from a wholly long-wear face.
